Ole Bull, a Bergen born violinest and composer, is a bit of a Norwegian legend. One might even say, in his day he was an international superstar. On Friday 8 May, Utdanning i Bergen (Study Bergen), offered a group trip to the Museum at Lysøen Island. The Museum is a villa that was one of Ole Bull’s former residences. I went along for the ride, and I want to share with you my top three reasons to visit Ole Bull’s villa.
3. Check out that onion dome:
The Lysøen villa is architecturally unique. Built in about one year starting in 1872 and inspired by Bull’s travels, the villa incorporates design elements influenced by multiple countries.
2. Wander the Island:
Lysøen villa is situated on a picturesque island equipped with walking paths, gazebos and ponds. You can take your time exploring 14 km of trails, wading in the water, or sitting and enjoying the view.
1. Enjoy a life story:
Bull has quite the biography, filled with fainting women (of which it’s said he’d carry smelling salts to revive the most attractive), traveling and living abroad, and highly esteemed (and ultimately highly priced) concerts. Not to mention his second wife was 40 years his junior! A child prodigy and ultimately a virtuoso musician. Bull was quite the charmer, quite a character, and quite a talent.
Wanna hear some crazy Ole Bull stories? Daily guided tours are available in summer season: 11:15, 12:15, 13:15, 14:15 and 15:15.
Ready to go?
And, speaking of concerts, you can attend one at Ole Bull’s villa! Check out their calendar of events here.
Ole Bull’s Villa at Lysøen is part of the Kode Museums. Its regular season opens on 18 May. Remember, UiB students can get into Kode for free on Thursdays with a student ID.
How do you get there?
