Study Break: Be held rapt at Raptus

Need more distractions from your studies? Not to worry, coming up this weekend is Raptus Festivalen. Raptus, also know as Bergen International Comics Festival, was first established by Danish cartoonist/artist Rasmus Julius in 1996. It features a variety of events focused on comics and their creators. Raptus starts Friday evening 16 September, and ends on the 18th of September. Entrance is free of charge. The event is held at Scandic Bergen City (Håkonsgaten 2 through 7). Check out all the events in Raptus’s programme, here.

Here I’ll focus on a few of the presentations which seem likely to be in English (as they were described in English in the Raptus Programme):

The comics and illustration art of Dave Windett

Friday 16th September, 19:00 at Kjellersmauet
Dave Windett, a British cartoonist and illustrator, has a vast resume of international publications to which he has contributed both original characters as well as illustrating licensed characters. You can check out his website here. Take a look at just a small sample of his awesome art below.

Sara Richard: Creating comics

Saturday 17th September, 17:00 at Hødden

Eisner Award-nominated Sarah Richard also has diverse creative credits, including variant covers IDW Publishing’s My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic series, Dynamite’s Bob’s Burgers, Oni Press’ Rick and Morty, and Marvel’s Deadpool; Jem and The Holograms covers; a Ghostbusters interior story; and the DC Collectables’ Justice League Tarot Card Set illustrations. Paolo Mottura: Creating comics in Italy

Sunday 18th September, 14:00 at Hødden

In addition to other numerous other works, Paolo Mottura has illustrated for Mondadori (the Italian Disney publisher) since 1989. Read more about his other work, including everything from character design to puzzle illustrations, here. Check out this Disney action, below:

Check out this local illustrator/small business-owner’s work at her stand. Or check out her website or her shop at Bryggen (Jacobsfjorden, 5003 Bergen) if you can’t make it to the festival.

There are even cosplay cosplay related events, including a competition for pop culture cosplay on Saturday at 18:00. Don’t know what cosplay is? I don’t believe you. Well, if you really don’t know, wikipedia can tell you here. According to Raptus’s website, Saturday’s competition offers awards for best costume design, best stage performances, and best character representation.
